Photo Contest Winners Announced

Photo Contest Winners Announced

On Tuesday night, April 6, in a jam-packed screening room at the Hollywood Theater in Portland, Oregon, the top three winners of the 2010 Public Health Photo Contest were announced and presented with their cash awards.

First place and $300 was awarded to 17-year-old Kelton Woodburn of Lake Oswego, Ore. The winning photo addresses poverty as a key determinant of health, as it focuses on the feet of a young boy living in a town dump, taken while the student photographer was visiting Nicaragua.

Second place and $200 was awarded to 13-year-old Kasey Truax of West Linn, and third place and $100 was awarded to Nora Hobson, 12, of Oregon City (photo pictured here).

The second and third place winners looked at nutrition as an important factor in health.

Other entries cover smoking, water, litter, exercise, junk food, and grocery stores as contributors to health.

The contest was a partnership between Community Health Priorities, a project of the Northwest Health Foundation, and the Oregon Public Health Division.

All the 85 submitted photos and their captions, including those of the winners, can be seen here.

The panel of judges was comprised of Public Health Division and Northwest Health Foundation staff, high school and college students, and members of the photography and art criticism communities.

Following the presentation, the audience watched the film “Straightlaced,” which was then followed by a stimulating panel discussion on issues of gender in society today.

Seeing this years winner “America is Lovin’ It Too Much” i think i prefer this one much more. At least some effort was made in making it.

The Public Health Photo contest is such a great idea to get people thinking about healthy living.  I enjoyed the flickr video.  There were great photos with stories behind healthy eating, exercise, damage of bad habits and more.  All of the entrants did a great job.
